Location:  915 Olentangy River Rd

Purpose:  Working within our Ophthalmology Clinic at the OSU Eye and Ear Institute and our outlying clinic in Dublin, the Ophthalmic Technician provides high quality, accurate and compassionate care to a diverse patient population.

An Ophthalmic Technicians display a high proficiency in taking patient histories and are highly organized to fully prepare the patient for the physician appointment in addition to having the willingness to adapt to an evolving job description and expand responsibilities as the company grows.

Primary Responsibilities – may include the following:

  • Interacts professionally and compassionately with patients daily.
  • Initiates patients exams and prepares patients for physician appointments
  • Performs diagnostic testing such as visual acuity eye exams, lensometry, keratometry, refractometry  and tonometry
  • Documents symptoms, complaints, medical history, medications, allergies and reactions
  • Enters examination finding into Electronic Medical Record
  • Obtains Ophthalmic imaging: OCT, HRT, Topography, Pachymetry, Specular Microscopy, Manual A-scans and IOL Master
  • Perform visual fields: Humphrey, Goldmann and Octopus fields.
  • Completes medical forms
  • Instructs patients on proper eye care and use of contact lens procedures
  • Assists physicians and other health care providers in the Ophthalmology clinic
  • Properly assists physically or visually disabled patients
  • Assists in coordination of research studies
  • Disinfects, stocks and maintains examination rooms
  • Adhere to regulations regarding drug samples and drug sample logs
  • Ensures medication and supply expiration dates are current
  • Performs related patient service when necessary and as requested

  • Attendance, promptness, professionalism, the ability to pay attention to detail, cooperativeness with co-workers and supervisors, and politeness to customers, vendors, and patients.

  • Other duties or special projects as assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • COA or COT Certification preferred

  • 2 years experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
  • Work effectively with individuals and team

  • Knowledge of Ophthalmic terminology and testing required as directed

  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records preferred.

  • Evidence of organizational and problem solving skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrative effectiveness in conveying information both in writing and verbally.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of job responsibilities and uses appropriate knowledge and skills to effectively complete work.
  • Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.  Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

  • Must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization

  • Communicates and reports to the Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor
